All motor sport events are reliant on a dedicated group of marshals and officials. A race meeting requires lots of both. SEMSEC race meetings, at the Lydden circuit , have a team of marshals to man the track and are keen to train new volunteers. A large number of officials are required to ensure the events smooth running. Again SEMSEC and TWMC welcome anyone willing to join the team. Stage Rallies, Sprints and Hillclimbs all require the same teams, even an autotest requires somebody to operate a stopwatch.
Jobs are varied and include the obvious tasks such as flag marshals and incident marshals (those who attend to crashed/broken-down cars, clearing the track etc.). There are many more jobs all of which have to be done. Lap counting (knowing what position each car is in on each lap), observing of driving standards, deciding if a race should be stopped or if it is safe to carry on after an incident, settling disputes and much more. Some of the jobs require more training than others and some require the person to be licenced by the MSA, but all can be done by TWMC members.
In general terms, there are none. Volunteers are welcome at any age, although the duties of young people may be limited in certain situations.
Motor Sport offers "equal opportunities" at all levels, although there are a few legal exemptions, including certain competitor disabilities and minimum ages for both competing and officiating.
If you already have special skills - technical, mechanical, rescue, vehicle recovery, medical, first aid or administration; you may wish to use those skills as a volunteer in motor sport.
